Functions of Management

Management is the combination of three words:  Manage+ men+ t, which means to manage a men tactfully.

According to Harold Koontz, "Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups."

Management is the process of achieving Organizational Goals and Objectives Effectively (Is about doing the right things) and Efficiently (Is about doing the  things right) by using Management Functions.


Planning bridges the gap from where we are to where we want to go. It makes it possible for things to occur which would not otherwise happen.


Planning is deciding In advance what to do, how to do, when to do and by whom it is to be done. It is one of the basic managerial function.


Organizing is the process of identifying and grouping of the work to be performed, defining and delegating responsibility and authority and establishing relationships for the purpose of enabling people to work most efficiently.


Staffing is one of the most important function of management. It is the process of filling vacant position by appointing the right personnel at the right job, at the right time. Hence, everything will occur in the right manner.


Directing is said to be a process in which the managers instruct, guide and oversee the performance of the workers to achieve predetermined goals. Directing initiates action and it is from here actual work starts. Direction is said to be consisting of human factors. In simple words, it can be described as providing guidance to workers is doing work.


Controlling is one of the managerial function like planning, organizing, staffing and directing. It helps to check the errors and take the corrective action so that deviations from standards are minimized and stated goals of the organization are achieved in a desired manner.
