Padmashri Guru Rani Karnaa represented LPU Distance Education in “One India 2015”

It was a matter of honour for Directorate of Distance Education of Lovely Professional University as Padamshri & Sangeet Natak Academy awardee Kathak Exponent Guru Rani Karnaa (Nayak) joined hands with LPU Distance Education to represent the state of West Bengal during mega event “One India - 2015” at LPU campus. She was accompanied by her senior disciple Ms. Sohini Debnath.

The women dignitaries interacted with the students and provided them valuable tips to hone their performing arts skills.  Students also got the golden opportunity to learn from the life experiences of these renowned women achievers.  
 
In her testimonial, Guru Rani Karnaa remarked, “The concept itself was interesting – depicting and rendering the Puja and Durga & Mahishasur. In other words Mahishasur Mardini. It was good endeavour. Energetic & Dramatic, Bold & Vigorous. Good Effort. Well supervised, coordinated and entertaining. The students of this institute were hard working, diligent, devoted and committed. A praiseworthy effort – Bravo. Keep up the spirit." 
 
Ms. Sohini Debnath also expressed her feelings in the following words, “One India has been a unique experience organized by LPU. As we were specially invited by the DDE, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks. The entire department including the students and staff were intensely involved in the event and the exhibits showed their hard work and diligence. DDE has done commendable job and I wish them all the very best. Keep up the hard work. I was overwhelmed by their reception and warm hospitality.”
 
 Here are the brief profiles of the legendary Kathak Exponents:

Guru Rani Karnaa has been honoured with Padmashri by the honourable President of India in 2014. Her other prominent achievements include Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi (1997); President's Gold Medal (1955), Order of the Queen of Laos (1964), Vijay Ratna  by Indian International Friendship Society, New Delhi  (1990) and Senior Fellowship by  Department of Culture, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India (1995 – 1996). She is the founder and Vice President of Kolkata based Kathak Dance Academy; Samskritiki Shreyaskar. Nurtured under the great Gurus Nrityacharya Narayan Prasad, Pandit Sunder Prasad and Birju Maharaj, she has enriched and integrated the great traditions of Jaipur and Lucknow Gharanas with an unusual sense of aesthetic adventure. Widely travelled in India and abroad, presently she divides her time in teaching, conducting workshops and research work. She was the founder and head of the dance department of the Calcutta School of Music and Aurobindo Bhavan, Calcutta and is the honorary convenor of Sangeet and Nritya Sikshan Bharati of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Calcutta.

Senior disciple of Guru Rani Karnaa, Ms. Sohini Debnath was initiated into Kathak at the early age of three years and has also received primary training in Odissi and Hindustani Classical Music. A Grade solo artiste with the Doordarshan Kendra, Ms. Sohini has won numerous awards including Gold Medals at the Doverlane Music Conference, State Music Academy and the Governors Gold Medal at the East Zonal Competition organized by EZCC. She is the recipient of the National Scholarship for Dance from the Govt. of India and is empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations; ICCR, New Delhi and Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. She regularly tours different parts of Europe; Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland for solo Kathak performances.  Presently she is Secretary and Creative Head of Samskritiki Shreyaskar, Guru Rani Karnaa’s Kathak Academy.
